Welcome back to Fresh Roasted Coffee's monthly Sustainability Report!

This June proved just how productive those long summer days can be, setting a new record for the most solar energy our array has generated in a single month since it was energized!

This month our on-site solar array generated 112.06 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity while our roasting team produced 287,265 pounds of freshly roasted coffee. Together, these efforts continue to demonstrate how thoughtful investments in sustainability can make a measurable difference month after month.

Powering Sustainability Through Summer Sunshine

June's long daylight hours helped our 753.25 kW DC solar array, comprised of 1,310 bifacial solar panels, generate a record-breaking 112.063 MWh of renewable electricity: our highest monthly solar production to date. As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky during the summer solstice, solar panels receive more hours of direct sunlight, allowing systems like ours to produce some of their highest monthly outputs of the year.

For comparison, 112.06 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy would

  • power 125 average U.S. homes for a month (assuming ~899 kWh per home/month) US EPA
  • brew 1.12 million cups of coffee (assuming 100Wh per brew on a standard machine) Silicon Valley Power

We used the EPA’s 2022 national average emissions factor of ~1405 lbs CO₂ per MWh, to determine that our facility avoided 78.74 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions by using a renewable energy source for power.

Cleaner Roasting: How'd We Stack Up?

Renewable energy is only one part of our sustainability story.

Throughout June, Fresh Roasted Coffee roasted 287,265 pounds of coffee using our fleet of Loring Smart Roasters, technology designed to reduce roasting emissions by approximately 80% compared to conventional roasting systems. By recirculating heat throughout the roasting process, Loring roasters use significantly less fuel while delivering the consistency and precision required for specialty coffee.

This month's roasting production resulted in an estimated 16.24 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions avoided through our efficient roasting technology.

When renewable energy generation and efficient roasting technology work together, the environmental impact becomes even greater.

During June:

  • Solar generation avoided approximately 78.74 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions.
  • Efficient roasting avoided an additional 16.24 U.S. tons of CO₂ emissions.
  • Combined, these efforts prevented an estimated 94.98 U.S. tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

For comparison, that equals

  • The amount of CO₂ 1,436 trees absorb in one year. EPA
  • The amount of CO₂ produced by 18.73 passenger vehicles driven for one full year. EPA

Coffee Break Science: Why June Is a Solar Powerhouse

While sunny weather certainly helps, June's exceptional solar production is driven primarily by daylight duration.

Around the summer solstice, the Northern Hemisphere experiences its longest days of the year. More daylight means solar panels have additional hours to generate electricity, often producing higher monthly totals than almost any other time of year.

Our bifacial solar panels also capture reflected sunlight from both the front and back of each panel, helping maximize energy production throughout the day. Combined with June's extended daylight hours, this makes early summer one of the most productive seasons for renewable energy generation.

Those conditions came together to deliver the proof in numbers: our highest monthly solar energy production on record!

Beyond the Numbers

At Fresh Roasted Coffee, sustainability isn't defined by a single project or milestone. It's the result of continuous investments in renewable energy, efficient equipment, and operational improvements that work together to reduce our environmental impact over time.

Whether it's generating clean electricity through our on-site solar array or roasting coffee with industry-leading efficiency, every improvement supports our mission of producing exceptional coffee while making thoughtful choices for the future.

As we move into the heart of summer, we're proud to continue building on that commitment—one roast, one ray of sunshine, and one cup of coffee at a time.
