Coffee producers in the DRC worked without organization or coordination, forcing them to negotiate independently with buyers who were free to impose price according to their mood. To get a better price, they would take tremendous risks to move their coffee beans to markets in Rwanda. The Muungano Agricultural Cooperative was formed in 2009 to improve the quality of life and the quality of coffee from these growers. Today, the co-op has over 4,000 members, nearly half of which are women. The increased selling power has allowed its members to buy medicine, send their children to school, and improve the quality of their products.
