Senna Leaf (Senna alexandrina) is a plant in the legume family with bright, yellow blooms. While there are many different varieties of Senna, Positively Botanicals uses Egyptian Senna, which is the most common species. Use of Senna dates back to ancient Egyptian times where the plant was harvested for its leaves and seed pods, which were used in various herbal tonics and remedies.
When used in moderation and as directed, Senna in a tea form can be used as a potent laxative. The leaves contain a wide variety of amino acids, anthranoids and sennosides (natural laxatives). Senna in the form of tea should never be consumed for more than 2 weeks at a time. It’s best practice to consult a physician before drinking Senna Tea to determine its safety and efficacy on an individual basis.
